How to Punch

Home » fight technique » How to Punch

On: July 14, 2020 | By: FightWrite

We are in the midst of a series on writing female fighters. The most recent post discussed how to pick a fighting style for ANY character. I thought it would be a good idea to take a break and actually learn how to punch.

What your character should NOT do when they punch.

This video is a how to punch tutorial just for writers. In it, FightWrite™ discusses: stance, when to change the stance, the physics of punching, when the surface isn’t good for punching, why you throw a punch and don’t punch a punch, why technique matters, why you protect the jaw, what punches wear an opponent down, jab, cross, hook, how hooks and haymakers differ, doing the most with the least, uppercut, how an uppercut is different, why punches should have the same stances, when you are vulnerable, elbow, boxer’s break, back fist, and the Superman punch or, as I call it, the “mullet” punch. Whew!!! I said that all in one breath!

Give this video a look and by all means SUBSCRIBE to not only my YouTube channel but this blog. Until the next round at FightWrite™.net, get blood on your pages!

Use this info to reach, not teach your reader.  Don’t give them a tutorial on punching. That’s not why they are reading. Instead, use this video to help you understand how your characters are oriented. That will help you know what moves can reasonably follow. For example, a jab doesn’t lend itself to a back kick from the forward leg. Check out the stance again in the video and you’ll see why. Also, it’s never a bad idea to stand up and move roughly through your blocking.  Just sayin’.

Until the next round at FightWrite™, get blood on your pages.
