Fight Technique for Writers – X Choke

Home » fight technique » Fight Technique for Writers – X Choke

On: July 21, 2020 | By: FightWrite

All along I help record videos for a site called BJJSoul.com.  Recently I recorded an X choke that you absolutely can do to someone wearing a jacket or coat. You may find it useful in your work. Here’s the basics of the choke and then the technique. After, I will tell you some things to keep in mind as you write this choke. (I haven’t forgotten about the choosing a fight for your character post – pt3! Promise.)

In case you didn’t see, it’s called an X Choke because you make a “x” with your arms. It’s a great choke. All that is necessary for this technique is a substantial collar. I would say even a hoodie would be enough but not a T shirt. This is a blood choke and would render a character unconscious. What does that feel like? It’s painful. When the choke first sets in, you feel pressure in your head which turns to pounding. You can breathe, you can talk, although, the latter is uncomfortable and strained. Panic does set in if you are new to blood chokes and you go a bit wild. You can guarantee the person caught in the choke, outside of a sanctioned fight, would scratch, claw and punch. So, your character would need to use their legs to keep the combatant close in order to protect their own face.

The person doing the choke may or my not feel the heartbeat on the neck of the person they are choking. If you add in that the heartbeat pounded against the wrists of the person doing the choke, you wouldn’t be wrong.

Once the combatant is rendered unconscious, your choking character needs to get away. Sometimes people “come to” pretty quick. Other times they don’t. The longer the choke is held the more dangerous it is to the victim as the brain is starved of O2. Which makes me think I need to do a post just on what it feels like to regain consciousness after. 🤔 BUT, I will finish the series of picking a fight for your character first! Promise!

Until the next round at FightWrite™, get blood on your pages!

(I don’t know why, but, I almost wrote “love, Carla.” 🤷‍♀️ )
